Starting the new year with a bang

It’s January 1st, 2010 – and the start of the ‘tenties’ as I saw someone mention on Twitter.

With the festivities out of the way, I hope no one has forgotten that there’s a painting challenge deadline on Sunday January 10th – which is our Silent Night theme. There’s still plenty of time to get your entry prepped, painted and photographed – so get your brushes out and get cracking.

There is no January painting challenge, so the next one will start on February 1st (not before!) and the theme is: Duel.

Jonathan Shaw, of BMF painting is continuing to sponsor the Merit Award trophy this year, and this highly sort after prize can one be won by an SI member with the highest public vote from one of our monthly painting challenges.

The Scenery challenge is also nearing the finish line – with a deadline of January 24th creeping ever closer. There’s some interesting project blogs on the FB discussion board – but there’s no reason why you can’t join in now. Read up on the rules, and see if you can bag some prizes.

WaMP is running the biggest ever online painting competition until February 14th, so there’s no reason not to join in with that one – especially when it helps raise money for Tommy’s charity.

For those of you in the UK, and able to get to Sheffield, our painting sessions kick back off on Sunday January 10th at Patriot Games (wear a jumper!), and we’re planning on having some Saturday sessions as well this year – stay tuned for more info.

We also have some exciting events lined up – not just in Sheffield:

First up is the big painting day at Maelstrom’s Eye of the Storm centre in Mansfield, where SI Platoon Britannica and the Basement forum are teaming up to create a day of workshops and painting fun for everyone! It’s on February 6th, and we’ll have lots more details coming in the lead up to the big day. Get this one in your diary now!

One the last Sunday in February, South Cheshire Militaire is back in Crewe. Last year SI had a table, but this year we’re just hoping members who are free will turn up, join in the painting competition and have some fun at one of the most diverse modelling shows in the country. Plus – there may be Daleks!

In April, Sheffield is host to the best gaming show in the North of England – Triples! SI will be running a participation painting event, but we’re keeping the details a secret for now. Make sure you’re in town for April 17th – 18th to join in. (Become a fan of Triples on Facebook).

Salute, at the Excel Centre in London is on Saturday 24th April, at there was a fantastic painting competition in 2009, which I’m sure will be equalled if not improved on this year. If you’re in the area, turn up for a chance to buy some amazing models for painting, as well as for gaming with. This is fast becoming a must attend show for any painter.

Later in the year Irregular Miniature Paintfest will be back as IMP II. Due to popular demand, it’s back and will be bigger and better than last year. The premier SI calendar event, with workshops, the Golden Imp Awards – painting competition, and a chance to get your name on the Buddhist Demon Slaying Sword if you win the speed painting competition, will be held once more in Sheffield and we’ll have more details as soon as we book a date!

So plenty to look forward to, and I’m sure it will be another busy year improving our painting, and encouraging others in the hobby.

Keep an eye on our Calendar and Events pages throughout the year, as well as following us on Twitter or on Facebook for more info.

Enjoy 2010 everyone.
